Biopsy Size and locations
Dec 23, 2003
Have you seen the recent article on biopsies? I think it was written by Dr David Bernstein at NSUH on Long Island. Were he discussed that biopsies may not be as accurate as they thought. That they take such a small piece out of a large organ and usually from one location. That it would be more accurate to take several larger samples from different locations. To take more then one sample would they have to make more then one entrance hole?
Response from Dr. Dieterich
No some biopsiers take several cores through the same small incision, just point the needle in different directions. However, the recent editorial in Hepatology did conclude that in liver biopsies size really matters! The more tissue, the better the accuracy. All in all biopsies are pretty accurate. More passes, though mean more chances of complications like bleeding. Everything we do in medicine has to be a balance of risk and reward. Good question. DTD
