I recently read on one of the web sites that HIV/Hep C coinfection has a much lower rate of clearing the virus than someone without HIV. Is this true? Is there a small percent of HIV coinfected patients that do clear the virus with genotype 1, or is it unlikely? Please respond. Thank you.
Response from Dr. Dieterich
Good question. The ACTG trial results were disappointing, but still significant. It certainly is possible to clear the virus even if you are HIV+ and genotype 1. We have many examples in our group. In addition, what is really exciting is when you clear the virus, your CD4 cells will go up about 75 cells. We will be presenting that data at the Liver meetings in October. Yes it is possible, but it is not easy! DTD
