Let us KNOW please!
Mar 11, 2001

This question is asked all over this forum. It must matter to a lot of people. Please help ease peoples minds if they come into contact with any type of dried blood. How long can blood born pathogens live in dried blood and still be able to infect us? HIV, HEP, EBOLA.I know you can't give an exact minute, but can you answer within the hour? In the medical related field, I often see dried blood and used band-aids. Thank You

Response from Dr. Rodriguez-Torres

Hepatitis C virus can remain alive and viable on exposed surfaces for hours. To be infected with HCV that way you need direct contact of the material with an exposed wound or lesion.Tranmission this way is very rare. HIV remains viable for minutes.
