Question for sister
Jul 11, 2003

Dear Dr. Dietrich,

My sister has lived with HCV all her life (Blood transfusion as infant). She is 33 years old and recently found out that the HCV is no longer dormant. Would HCV at this point in her infection cause a complete clearing of the virus? Are individuals who have had the virus dormant for a long period of time, any less or more likely to receive a cure? Thanks for taking the time to read my question.

--PL

Response from Dr. Dieterich

Like many infections, the sooner you treat it the better it is. However almost everyone who has been treated for HCV has had it for 20 or 30 years. It is not really a problem. The only way to find out for sure if whe will respond is to treat her. She should have a very good chance of a cure. Wish her luck! DTD
