Hep virus out-of-body lifespan
Jun 20, 2003

As an educator, I need an answer to this before a student asks the question. We teach the Hepatitis virus can survive on a dry surface at room temprature for at least five days. Doesn't this contradict the bloodborne/sexual contact issue? Would the Hep B / Hep C be a factor in this? Thank-you for offering this forum.

Response from Dr. Dieterich

The hepatitis viruses don't really survive outside the body for a long time a day or two at the most and it is very variable depending on temperature humidity sunlight etc. It is virtually impossible to get these viruses into your blood stream so the risk of transmission is very low. Stay well! DTD
