GB Virus-C Co-Infection May 29, 2003 What exactly is the full name of the GB Virus? I know it is called Hepatitis-G Virus, but what does the GB stand for? (e.g., C-Difficile = Clostridium Difficile). Thanks! |

 GB virus C is the official name and it is not really Hepatitis G, it is not really a heptitis virus at all. Although it is related to HCV and shares about 85% of its genes it does not cause liver disease! The letters GB are the initials of the surgeon from whom the disease was isolated first. His blood was saved for over 30 years and the folks from Abbott labs found the virus a few years ago and then tracked him down and he is fine and still operating. So GB virus C is the way it will be known! It does seem to have a positive effect on the progression of HIV! Don't go out and give it to anybody though! DTD | ||||||||
