mechanism of antibody production
Apr 14, 2003

Dr. Dieterich: Are the same mechanisms involved with provoking immune response in Hep B vaccination, and HIV infection seroconversion? I am concerned about delayed seroconversion due to potential HIV/HepC simultaneous exposure. After the possible exposure, my physician has completed the HBV vaccine series, and titers have come back showing my body has responded to vaccination. My question: My body has effectively responded to HBV vaccination series after the potential HIV/HepC exposure. If I was truly exposed to HIV/Hep C at some point months prior to Hep B vaccine, would there also have been antibodies present to HIV/Hep C infection viruses as the titers to HBV suggest immune competence?

Response from Dr. Dieterich

Yes. If you can make antibodies to HBV it is likely you can also make antibodies to HIV and HCV. Congrats on the vaccines! Good idea! DTD
