|She can't cope - hep b?
Dec 22, 2002
Please could you help? My friend was tested last october for hep b and again this october and both tests came back with the same results. The doctor told her at the first test she had nothing to worry about but for the test she had recently the doctor said the tests showed she must have had hep b in the past but she has got rid of it, even though both test showed exactly the same results and they told her she had nothing to worry about the first time. However, another doctor she spoke to at the clinic told her that the results showed she had never come into contact with hep b before. Both doctors said, however, that the tests showed below 10 units and apparantly everyone has below 10 units in their blood even if they have never had hep b or the vaccine The reason she is worried is in case she has passed it onto one of her partners while she was infected and she needs to inform them.
The doctor also suggested she have the vaccination because the test showed below 10 units which is not enough immunity
Please can you tell me:
Has she ever had hep b because the doctors said they class below 10 units as being negative, therefore, i assume all the tests must have come back negative
Can someone have the antibodies (below 10 units) in their blood even they have never had hep b before because this is what the doctors told her.
Does she need the vaccination?
She has contacted a number of other doctors but no-one can help and the clinic where she had the test keep giving her different answers, also, in the UK which is where she lives and was tested they do not have a helpline. She is so upset and confused. please help.
Response from Dr. Dieterich
It sounds like she has hepatitis B core antibody which means an old exposure which she has apparently cleared. If that is the case then she is not infectious. She would not be infectious if she was having safe sex anyway. Keep up the condom use and she should be fine. Good luck. DTD
