HBV thru dry surfaces
Dec 22, 2002

I understand that the Hep B virus can survive about a week on a dry surface. 1)Can Hep B virus crawl away or cling to any dry suface? 2)If a person sits on a stained surface, can he carry the virus on his pants, then develop hep B when he touches the surface with his own open wound? 3)Can hep B virus be transferred between 2 dry surfaces and cause hep B infection when the virus enters the blood stream within the one week that it can survive?

Response from Dr. Dieterich

First of all the virus does not crawl. It is very unlikely to have any transmission from dry surfaces. It cannot be transferred from one dry surface to another. It is really a sexually transmitted disease from blood to blood or mucosal membranes to membranes. Dont' worry but be safe! DTD
