|Transmission of HBV
Nov 11, 2002
Recently I have learned that I carry inactive HBV. I am very concerned about transmitting the virus to my old girl friends. Although Ive never been sexually active, I would like to know if HBV can be transmitted by kissing since HBV is present in the saliva. In addition, I would like to know if inactive HBV can ever become active.

If you never had sex with your old girl friends then it is unlikely that you could transmit HBV. It is unclear what you mean by inactive HBV. It may mean that you were exposed and got better in that case you are not contagious at all. It may also mean that you are a chronic carrier in which case you may be a little contagious. At any rate most of your girlfriends should have had HBV vaccine anyway so they would not be able to catch HBV. Find out from your MD exactly what tests are positive for HBV. Good luck! DTD
