TEST RESULTS- NEED HELP!!!
Oct 2, 2002

My mother has active Hepatitis C. Could you please tell us what this all means???

HCV RNA, PCR (Copies/ml): 1020000 Reference Range: less than 1620 Unit: copies/ml

HCV RNA, PCR (IU/ml): 379000 Reference range: less than 600 Unit: IU/ml

ALT: 29 References range: 35 or less Unit: IU/L

So, our questions are, what are the norms for these and what do her results indicate?

Also, her doctor told her that her liver enzymes are not elevated and it would not have been tested for, had she not given blood. Since they are not elevated he said he will test her once a month for six months then if no elevation of enzymes occurs he will refer her to a study being done on people with hcv with no elevation since treatment usually makes it worse in the rare cases like hers. Is that possible?

Thank you very much for this wonderful service.

WE REALLY, REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND YOUR ANSWERS. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Response from Dr. Dieterich

It means about a million copies, which is regarded as low.(less than 2-3 million) However should have genotype, ultrasound and liver biopsy to get the whole picture. So far it sounds good! DTD
