Wine damage to liver?
Sep 20, 2002

Last May my lab results for ALT came back at 69.My HMO doctor told me to stop evening glass or two of wine.July results were AST 27 and ALT 29. For several months I have had a strip of pink itchy rash across my stomach. Could this be related to my liver? Thank You!

Response from Dr. Fried

Interestingly, the alcohol content of a glass of wine, a can of beer, and a shot of whiskey are similar. The iver enzyme pattern you describe is not typical of alcohol injury but there are many reasons why liver enzymes can be mildly, transienty elevated. If there are other risk factors for liver disease, ie hepatitis C,you should get appropriate blood tests. I doubt the rash is related to liver disease but if it persists see your doctor.
