Treatment of Acute infection. Sep 20, 2002 I was possibly exposed to HIV and Hepatitis 60 days ago. I am awaiting the results of my hiv pcr. I took hep c anti body and HBV suface antigen & antibody tests at 40 days post exposure-all tests were negative.My question is: If I have contracted Hep C from my risky exposure, what is the prognosis if I treat it immediately(Within 3 months of exposure). What factor will recent hiv infection have on treatment of acute hep c? |

 In order to determine more quickly if HCV infection is present, check HCV RNA by PCR. This should be positive by now. If HCV RNA is repeatedly positive over 3-4 months after the exposure, it is likely that it will become a chronic infection. Recent data suggests a very high likelihood of cure with interferon therapy in the setting of acute HCV (~98%). The impact of recent HIV infection in this situation is not known. Definitely, encourage your doctor to check HCV RNA and discuss the pros/cons of early therapy. | ||||||||
