|sexual contact and Hep C
Jul 14, 2002
Hello, I just recently met a man whom I really like and he told me that he has Hepititis C which he obtained through a blood tranfusion. All, I want to know is should I use protection when having sex with him as he will be my only sexual partner and if not what other precautions should I take if any.
Response from Dr. Fried
Hepatitis C may be sexually transmitted, although is a less common route than direct exposure to blood through transfusion or injecting drug use. Since the risks are small (BUT NOT ZERO), the CDC does not specifically recommend changing sexual practices in the context of a monogamous relationship. However, since you just met this person, you must consider whether practicing safe sex is best for you in that context.
