May 30, 2002
I read a report on this page of dt. 11/5/2002 informing that he has got rid of hepatitis C.
One of my close relative is suffering from Hepatitis C which has been detected recently. The SGPT count is around 500 .
What treatment do you suggest. What medication did the author of 11/5/2002 letter received. This may be very helpful for us.
A very blunt question, what are the chances of survival.
Response from Dr. Fried
Hepatitis C is a treatable disease. Current therapies involve interferon and ribavirin. Depending on the type of hepatitis C, "cure" can be achieved in 45-80% of patients. Hepatitis C can progress to serious liver disease but most people maintain milder liver disease. Your relative should be fully evaluated by a gastroenterologist/hepatologist who is experienced in managing patients with hepatitis C. Together, they can get a better idea the extent of his liver disease and which treatments are most appropriate.
