fulminant hepatitis
May 29, 2002

What is fulminant hepatitis? Is it diagnosed by incredibly high liver enzymes or bilirubin? What causes fulminant hepatitis?

Response from Dr. Dieterich

Fulminant hepatitis is severe liver failure caused by any number of things, like viruses, drugs or other infections. It is very serious and people sometimes recover and sometimes not. It is a reason to do a liver transplant emergently. The good news is that if people survive, there are no long term effects and the liver recovers completely! DTD
