Confused-should I have treatment?
Mar 22, 2002

Hello, I am writing from Canada. My doctor talked to me about peginterferon which should be available here in a short while. I am 36 years old, female. 18 years ago, got very very sick from non-hepA-hapB. I have been diagnostic chronic HepC years ago. My liver biopsy showed very very minor scars. All my blood tests are always ok. Because it is been a long time now that I am carrying this virus, and because of my yound age, should I be treated or should I just go on with my life? After 18 years, what are my chances of having liver diseases (cancer, etc.)? I do not know my genotype or my viral load. Should I have all my tests re-done? Get a second opinion? HELP I am so tired of always thinking of this, which it could go away. thanks a great lot.

Response from Dr. Fried

Decisions to treat HCV are usually based on several pieces of information including symptoms, lab work, the liver biopsy results, and the desire of the patient to be treated. Genotype would give you an idea of your chances of success with treatment but is not used to make a decision about whether or not to begin treatment. It's best if you sit down with your doctor and ask him/her to explain these results and make recommendations about treatment. If you do not get staisfying answeres, get a second opinion.
