False Positives
Feb 7, 2001

When one has no known exposure to HIV and does not fall within any of the risk categories, what would cause a positive result on the Western Blot and what are the chances of this happening? Is there another method of testing to be 100 positive of the diagnosis?

Response from Dr. Dieterich

False positives do occur. The way to be sure is to ask for a PCR for HIV. That also is not failsafe, but is very accurate. Good luck! DTD
