Elevated ALT/AST help
Feb 28, 2002

Are slightly elavated ALT/AST a concern? Over a five month period my results were as follows:

ALT AST 26 25 26 29 51 86 52 60 36 29 28 25 44

Response from Dr. Fried

My first question is, Why were they being tested so frequently? Was there concern about some type of exposure?

Mildly elevated ALT and AST may be non-specific or may indicate mild ongoing hepatic inflammation from a variety of causes, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or even chronic hepatitis B or C. The extent of work-up that will be done by your healthcare professional will depend upon other clinical circumstances.
