PCR testing Feb 27, 2002 How often should PCR testing for Hep B/C be accomplished to rule out infection in antibody negative patient with symptoms (raised ALTs, right quadrant pain, light stools) who is suspected to be immunoincompetent due to simultaneous HIV infection? Thanks for advice. |

 Once is enough generally to diagnose the disease. However I would never initiate treatment without at least one more confirmatory test and possibly two. PCR can be false positive as well as negative and should always be confirmed before treatment decisions are made. DTD | ||||||||
