|Hep B, confused?
Feb 13, 2002
I had the Hep B vaccine years ago and now I have Hep B? My Dr. said the virus stores in DNA and can come back. Can you shed some light on this? Thanks
Response from Dr. Fried
The hepatitis B vaccine does NOT cause hepatitis B. If you now have chronic hepatitis B (easily diagnosed by blood tests)several possibilities: 1. You already had chronic HBV before the vaccination, in which case the vaccination would not do anything 2. You had the vaccination, did not develop immunity (a rare event), and THEN became infected with HBV 3. You don't really have chronic HBV
Your doctor can do blood tests that can help sort this out.
