Confused
Feb 13, 2002

Three months ago I had a possible HCV exposure.

Two months ago I received a positive HCV anti, this was followed one week later with a negative HCV anti (not Riba - same test as 1st time) and a negative quan PCR and a pos qual pcr.

Last week more tests showed another neg anti and a neg quan pcr. I am awaiting the qual results.

My doc is confused in that he says the PCR's should almost always match. What could be going on here?

Thanks - this site has been a godsend!

Response from Dr. Dieterich

HCV qualitative PCR is more sensitive, but more likely to be false positive. I usually just use the quantitative because hepatitis C does not really live at low levels, so if the quant comes back low positive it is almost always due to a false positive. Repeat the Quant in a few months and if it is negative, then I would forget about it. Good luck! DTD
