hep c and no hep c
Jan 31, 2002

once you are diagnosed with hep c and completed treament, can you ever say I had hep c but do not now??

Response from Dr. Fried

Patients who are treated successfully are considered to have a "sustained virological response" (doctorspeak), which is now known to be the same as "cure" (more or less). So it is possible to get rid of hepatitis C: The HCV RNA in your blood is not detected at least 6 months AFTER stopping therapy. However, the antibody test (anti-HCV) will stay positive indefinitely, even though the disease is gone.
