Response from Dr. Fried
Fatty Liver, also called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, is a very common diagnosis. Although generally considered a mild chronic liver disease, it can progress to cirrhosis. Definitive diagnosis requires excluding other types of liver disease by appropriate blood tests and a liver biopsy. However, sometimes radiologic tests such as an ultrasound can give an indication if fatty liver is present. BUT these tests are not the most specific nor sensitive. Whether or not more aggressive diagnostic tests such as a liver biopsy are performed depends on the individual clinical circumstances. | |||||||||
