HCV/HIV vitamins and herbs
Oct 28, 2000

I am currently on a drug holiday from HIV meds because my liver biopsy shows severe fibrosis scarring and I was feeling toxic and wanted a break from meds. I'm waiting to get on pegylated interferon study. Since going on holiday my t cells which were 800 are now 500 and vl went from undetectable to 160,000. I'm not ready to go back on meds.

But I would like to know what vitamins and herbs are safe to help with my liver disease and keep my hiv in check.

What are your suggestions?

Response from Dr. Dieterich

There are no vitamins that have antiviral effect. However, antioxidant ones like E and C can help reduce the damage HCV is doing to your liver. Some people also take milk thistle which can lower your liver enzymes. You should also eat well, exercise in moderation and rest appropriately. Good luck! DTD
