|I really need to Know (- - -)

I had an incidental needle stick on Aug.30,2001 from a HIV+ patient. I tested myself at 18 weeks after the incident, it was negative. I just recently had a hepatitis profile done it was negative. How long does it take for hepatitis to show up. And do you think my negative results for hiv will change after 18 weeks.

From what you describe, it sounds like you are a healthcare worker. I hope that you informed the occupational health section of your facility so that they could perform the correct procedures and monitor your follow-up. That includes testing the patient (from whom you were stuck) for HIV and HCV and HBV. That information would be very important to outline your risk. In addition, baseline information about your hepatitis B vaccine status is also important. If you were vaccinated for HBV and have antibody titers than you are immune. Post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV would also have been indicated.
Fortunately the risk of acquiring HCV from a needlestick is small. Depending on the test, HCV PCR for example, if you are still negative at this point it is unlikely that you will have been infected.
