hepatitis and stools
Jan 20, 2002

In late stage chronic or acute hepatitis, would it be possible for stools to retain the same characteristic punngent odor? If so, is this bile or damaged liver cells being excreted? Can stools be checked for bile levels or damaged liver cells being expelled froma distressed liver?

Response from Dr. Fried

It should be kept in mind that there is great variation in what are "normal" stools and many factors such as diet, medications, vitamins, etc. can alter stool color and consistency. In acute hepatitis, stools may be described as light or clay-colored.

I would not recommend testing stools for the presence of liver disease. Simple blood tests are much easier to perform and yield a lot more information.
