 Hepatitis A is a self-limited infection that does not require any specific treatment, except monitoring for complications and preventing transmission to other close personal contacts. It does not become a chronic infection. Hep B may be a chronic infection. Approved treatments are lamivudine and interferon. Hep C often is a chronic infection. Many patient treated with interferon and ribavirin have a sustained virological response (almost synonymous with "cure"). The pegylated (or long-acting) interferons in combination with ribavirin are most effective. Genotype 1 is the most difficult type of hepatitis C to treat while genotypes 2 and 3 respond mcuh better to these drugs. | ||
