Response from Dr. McGovern

There are multiple side effects of pegylated interferon and ribavirin and include, but are not limited to:
Flu like symptoms (which usually resolve after a few shots)
Fatigue
Poor appetite and weight loss
Anemia and other hematologic abnormalities
Mood disorders
Headache
Nausea
We give medications to help with the specific symptoms. We also recommend exercise to combat the fatigue.
It is also important to use two forms of birth control during treatment since ribavirin can affect fetal development adversely.
You will need to discuss the full set of side effects with your physician.
