Cured of Hep C : can I donate organs?
May 25, 2009

About three years ago I spent a year on Interfuron and after the treatment, my gastro told me I was cured. I was so excited that I could give blood again that I tried to donate. They told me I could not donate blood ever in my life. Could you please help me understand what 'cured' of Hep C really means...and if I can not give blood, does that mean I can not donate organs like my kidney while I am alive...when I die, can I donate organs like my brain to science?

Yes you are considered by the medical community to be cured of hepatitis C. There are very rare instances where patients have had a relapse of their original infection. Congratulations on your great results.

However, blood banks do not discriminate between patients who are HCV antibody positive with virus versus those who are HCV antibody positive and free of virus.

As for organ transplantation, there has been discussion of broadening the definition of the ideal transplant donor since the organ shortage is significant in several areas.
