Chicken Pox HIV
Jun 29, 2001

Does the HIV rash look like a chicken pox rash . i recently had chicken pox after exposure(oral sex ***taker** with condom and mutual masturbation) , after a few weeks i had fever, sore throat ,some body pain and this rash ,on going to the doctor he said it was chicken pox , is there any link between hiv and chicken pox (i havent had chickenpox when young)

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hi,

Chicken pox has a very classic and characteristic appearance. Typically, it begins as crops of small, red papules that quickly develop into clear vesicles that look like "tear drops" on a reddish base. The rash associated with HIV infections is red, not itchy, and sometimes slightly raised. It isn't usually confused with chicken pox, and there is not a link between chicken pox and HIV. The exposure you describe - oral sex with a condom in place and mutual masturbation - would be extremely low risk. Continue practicing safe sex!
