 Hello Decreased platelet count can occur in both HIV positive and HIV negative persons. The platelets are important members of the blood cell family, as they play a major role in blood clotting. People with HIV sometimes develop "Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP), a disease where the spleen attacks the platelets. A rapid decrease in platelets is worrisome and should be evaluated. However many people with HIV have been able to function normally with platelet counts well below normal. Also, better technologies are being used for platelet replacement and platelet growth stimulation. |
