| When to treat anemia Jun 29, 2000 At what level should anemia be treated? I'm a little tired but not too bad. Should I still ask for treatment? |

Response from Dr. Frascino
There is no magic number at which treatment should start. There is no magic number at which treatment should start. The best thing to do is check your hemoglobin. If it's below the normal range you should attempt to find out why. If it's something simple like inadequate iron or B vitamins in your diet this can be easily remedied by appropriately supplementing your diet. If your anemia is caused by your HIV disease -- termed anemia of chronic disease, and your are having symptoms then treatment should be strongly considered. The lower limits or normal for hemoglobin are usually set at 13g/dl for men and 12g/dl for women. RJF |
