Hi Dr. I am research alot on internet about Milk Thistle. Is it interaction with Atripla Med? because my job I contact and smell with a lot of chemical, I would like to try the Milk Thistle to clean my liver and protect it. If yes, How long can i use it? long time? Short time? forever.....I hope I can hear from you soon. Have a good day. Michael.

I am not aware of any specific drug-herb interactions between the three antiretrovirals in Atripla and silybum marianum (milk thistle). That, however, doesn't mean interactions do not exist. Many potential drug-herb combinations have never been scientifically studied. We are aware of at least a minor drug interaction between milk thistle and a protease inhibitor (Crixivan).
Michael, I generally advise avoiding unessential herbal products while on antiretrovirals. Your HIV specialist can easily check the health of your liver by running simple liver function tests. If they are normal, I'd advise against using milk thistle or any other nonessential therapies.
