im depressed
Jun 19, 2009

Im 20 yrs and i got diagnosed 10 months ago. I was doing quite well actually. but, of late things arent going too well for me. The thing is that around 2 years ago, i lost my mum. Since then things are really bad at home. My relation with dad is also not good. Basically, besides dealing with the virus, i have a lot of other things in my head at all times. Also, of late iv been really worried about how my life will go on. I donno about marriage, career, nothin. i have somehow developed this feeling that there is no point in making plans for the future as there may not even be a future for me. In the last 2 years i have cmpletely changed as a person.I dont remember the last time i even laughed a lot. Its really screwed up. Help....

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hi,

You titled your post "I'm depressed." I absolutely agree. Certainly you have many reasons for having the blues: HIV, losing your mum, a bad relationship with your dad, etc. Depression in HIVers is common. Luckily depression is also amenable to treatment. Ask your HIV specialist for a referral for evaluation and treatment of your depression. Psychotherapy (counseling) and if needed antidepressant medication can be very effective in restoring the joy in your life and helping you cope with life's multiple stresses.

Good luck. Things can and will get better, OK?

Dr. Bob
