Doesn't swine flu scare you????
Response from Dr. Frascino
Does the swine flu scare me? Yes, it does Derek, but probably not for the reasons you might expect. The H1N1 virus (medical name for swine flu) outbreak frightens me because our health care system isn't equipped to handle it. In fact our health care system has evolved into a dysfunctional system that puts all of us at great risk. There are 47 million Americans without any health care insurance and another 25 million who are underinsured. This leaves vast numbers of U.S. citizens without access to health care. Add to this a severe economic recession and our overstretched and excessively stressed hospital/emergency room situation and you can begin to understand why I am concerned about adding a potentially killer virus that can spread rapidly into the mix! Busy-Cheney cut spending on public health and now the public health is at risk. These are the things that scare me about not only H1N1 but also any potential health threat that could (and most likely will) come our way in the not-too-distant future. Bravo to President Obama for having the cojones to finally attempt to fix this morally reprehensible and dangerous situation. I urge all readers to support Obama's effort to provide health care for all Americans. Isn't it interesting that Karl Rove and a variety of Republicans (and even a few democrats) were ranting just a few months ago that Obama was being frivolous because he included preparations for a flu pandemic in his economic stimulus package?!? This would be amusing if the entire situation wasn't so scary.
