NEUROPATHY
Jan 2, 2007

ARE THERE ANY NEW TREATMENTS FOR NEUROPATHY. I FIND IT SO HARD TO WALK CERTAIN DAYS. AND I DON'T DRIVE SO I HAVE TO WALK TO THE STORES. DOES WALKING EVERY DAY HELP NEROPATHY AT ALL? AND WAHT ABOUT THE TRANSDERMAL PATCH THAT IS BEING TALKED ABOUT. JUST ONE MORE THING. COST OF TREATMENTS. EVEN WITH AN HMO I STILL CAN'T AFFORD CERTAIN PERSCRIPTIONS. THANKS LEN.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello Len,

HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy can be a real pain, so to speak.

Here is what I advise:

1. Determine first if what you are experiencing is indeed HIV-associated distal sensory neuropathy or some other medical condition that can produce painful feet. There are some neuropathies that are very treatable, such as those caused by thyroid problems, vitamin B12 deficiency or pressure on a nerve that can be relieved.

2. Discontinue any neuropathy-aggravating HIV drugs; for example, didanosine (ddI) and/or stavudine (d4T).

3. Try a non-narcotic pain reliever. I recommend Lyrica. It's non-addictive and can be highly effective.

Len, I also suggest you check out the information on neuropathy that can be accessed here on The Body.

Good luck, Len!

Dr. Bob
