Response from Dr. Frascino
Hello, Well, you got that a bit turned around. Red blood cells cannot kill HIV; however, HIV can cause a decreased in red blood cells. If that does happen i.e. HIV causing a decrease in red blood cells ("anemia of chronic disease"), then your final conclusion is absolutely correct: Procrit can increase red blood cell numbers, and is beneficial. In fact, treatment of HIV-related anemia can not only ameliorate a wide array of symptoms, but it also is associated with improved survival! Hope that helps clarify things a bit. Stay well. Dr. Bob |
