Procrit
Jul 5, 2004

Bob: Can procrit itself help treatment of HIV+. I read a website long time ago that red cells can kill HIV virus. So if procrit can increase the red cell number, it should be beneficial.. Thanks.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,

Well, you got that a bit turned around. Red blood cells cannot kill HIV; however, HIV can cause a decreased in red blood cells. If that does happen i.e. HIV causing a decrease in red blood cells ("anemia of chronic disease"), then your final conclusion is absolutely correct: Procrit can increase red blood cell numbers, and is beneficial. In fact, treatment of HIV-related anemia can not only ameliorate a wide array of symptoms, but it also is associated with improved survival!

Hope that helps clarify things a bit.

Stay well.

Dr. Bob
