Fatigue Nausea after restarting treatment
May 10, 2003

After a year off antiretrovirals, I restarted treatment with Trizavir. I am three years post diagnosis, and this is my second round of meds. This time, I am defecating up to five times a day and experience a constant pain in my lower abdomen. I feel fatigued and worried. I went to my specialist and he suggested that it might take time for the body to adjust. Three weeks before treatment, I was diagnosed with IBD and various diverticula. I was already experiencing bloating and abdominal pain, but perhaps the meds are adding to the already existing problems. Should I continue on Trizavir or perhaps consider another alternative. It has been just over three weeks. Also, are there dietary restrictions that might be contributing to the problems and with information, I could correct? Thanks for any help that you can provide. Concerned

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello Concerned,

Constant belly pain and spending half the day on the pooper is not acceptable quality of life. Did all this begin when you started your Trizivir? If so, the meds certainly could be contributing to the problem. Yes, its true our systems do sometimes need some time to adjust, but your symptoms sound to me like they should be evaluated sooner rather than later. Id suggest revisiting with a competent, compassionate HIV specialist to review your meds, symptoms, and options. Recent information about Trizivir indicates it may not be as effective as other regimens. Therefore, you may have more than one reason for considering a change in medications. Good luck.

Dr. Bob
