How is Magic Johnson "CURED"?

Hi Doc,
I just don't understand how Magic Johnson is cured of this disease that is killing millions of people. How did he get the cure, but so many others are left in the dark? If it's a money issue, should't they just put the price on it and sell it publicly? Thoughts?

Hi,
The reason you don't understand how Magic Johnson is cured of HIV is that Magic Johnson is not cured!!! Wherever you heard that rumor, it is not true. Magic never had AIDS. Rather he is HIV positive. Like many of us, he takes antiretroviral medications every day. Also, like many of us, his HIV medications have driven his HIV plasma viral load to undetectable levels. This does not mean he is cured or that he is no longer HIV positive. He definitely would still test HIV positive on ELISA or HIV rapid testing, even though he may test "undetectable" on PCR viral load tests. The virus, even in folks who are undetectable, still resides in "sanctuary" sites that HIV drugs can not reach due to anatomical and/or immunological barriers. The bottom line is Magic Johnson is not cured.
