Why Norvir?
May 11, 2008

Dear Dr. Frascino; I am curious as to why Norvir is the only drug with boosting capabilities. Even at the lowered boosting dose, many people simply cannot tolerate the drug. Others simply will not take the drug because of Abbott's price gouging. Are trials being conducted to see if other old P.I.'s have boosting capabilities? If not, why? Thank you! Response from Dr. Frascino

Hi Joseph,

Actually Norvir isn't the only drug with protease-inhibitor boosting capabilities! However, it's the most potent booster we've found so far and the one we have the most pharmacologic data on. In addition Norvir itself has anti-HIV properties, as it is a protease inhibitor drug. I certainly agree it is not an easy drug to tolerate, primarily due to gastrointestinal side effects. Abbott's pricing policy continues to be a sore subject with all involved (except Abbott shareholders). Other potential boosters are being investigated. Stay tuned; we'll keep you updated as new potent, effective therapies come online.

Dr. Bob
