Full Blood count and sticky blood
May 9, 2001

Hi, I'm from England and since having a child I have become increasing worried that I may have been infected with HIV some years ago, I maybe one of the worried well. My questions is I had a Full blood count and Liver function test. I am not anemic and my liver test was fine, but my Dr said I had sticky blood (only slighty higher than normal) please could you tell me what is sticky blood and what causes it and is it linked to HIV. Appologises for the long question. Many thanks.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello England!

"Sticky blood?" You English chaps have the most colorful colloquialisms! Now, I've heard of "high blood" (hypertension), "low blood" (anemia), and even "bad blood" (syphilis), but I've never heard of "sticky blood." Perhaps, he means your platelet count might be a bit high. Platelets are cells that cause your blood to clot (so we don't bleed to death when we nick ourselves shaving). Whatever your physician means, I can say that it's most likely not related to HIV. By the way, what are "appologises?"

Cheerio!
