fatigue
Mar 12, 2008

I have been diagnosed for 2 years and not been put on meds until next week. I have been SO fatigued and my Hemogloban count was showing my red blood count below 8%. Is there anything other than iron I can do to help this.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,

A hemoglobin level of 8 gm/dL means you have significant anemia. Your HIV specialist should evaluate your HIV-associated anemia and determine the cause (or causes). Once the exact causes are known, specific treatment can be instituted. Review the archives of this forum to learn more about the underlying causes of HIV-associated anemia and their specific treatments. You can then discuss these with your HIV specialist. If one of the causes is HIV itself (anemia of chronic disease), beginning effective antiretroviral therapy may help.

Good luck.

Dr. Bob
