Ask the Experts about Fatigue and Anemia
anemia
Nov 24, 2006
can symptons of anemia be more pronounced at different times of the day? azt is part of my regimen.
Response from Dr. Frascino
Hello,
Different times of the day? No, generally speaking this is not the case. However, symptoms, such as fatigue, can be associated with different activity levels. For instance, one of the early signs of anemia is exercise tolerance. At rest the person may feel reasonably well, but get winded and fatigued with exercise or even minimally strenuous activity.
AZT can cause suppression of the bone marrow. The bone marrow is where red blood cell production takes place. Consequently, if the red cell production is depressed, anemia can result. A simple blood test called a hemoglobin level can determine if you are anemic. The lower limits of the normal range for hemoglobin are 12 g/dL for women and 14 g/dL for men. If your hemoglobin is below these limits, you are anemic and should discuss the situation with your HIV specialist, whether you are having symptoms or not.
Good luck.
