Response from Dr. Pierone
When someone loses facial fat it produces a lean or hollow appearance. Scary is not the best description, but rather the impression is often that the person is sick or in poor health. Continued loss of body and facial fat can be due to a variety of problems, HIV included. Skin darkening may also be caused by a number of different diseases as well. To my knowledge, treatment of HIV-related lipoatrophy is not generally available in Africa. Treatment programs are focused on ramping up capacity in order to reach more people in jeopardy from untreated AIDS. I hope this information helps and best of luck! | |||||||||
