| switched meds because of lipoatrophy Aug 16, 2008 I have lost fat on my face, legs and arms. It's frustrating me so much as people who know me well constantly ask if um sick?.. My meds have been switched to truvada and Viramune and i've been taking these for 6months.. My belly seems to have reduced, slightly going back to normal, but the rest of my body still looks odd with no fat. Is Viramune and Truvada the righr mix to reduce the problem and how long will it take on average for me to get back to normal, can't afford plastic surgery. Um also trying to fall pregnant, will this help at all with me regaining my body fat. Help um depressed, frustrated and confused! |

Response from Dr. Pierone
I am sorry to hear about your problems with lipoatrophy. You didn't mention what you were on before, but I assume you were either on AZT or d4T as part of your regimen. Generally, fat loss does improve after a switch to a regimen like Truvada and Viramune, but it takes a long time. The fat changes may not reverse completely, but you will not know this for years. There is fat gain that often comes with pregnancy, so this may improve the situation as well. For the facial lipoatrophy, Sculptra and Radiesse both offer patient assistance programs and these therapies are quite effective. I hope this information helps and best of luck! | ||||||||||
