Follow-up ? on possible facial wasting

May 24, 2008

Hi Doctor:

In your 04/26 resonce to facial wasting you mentioned some things to avoid. What if your're exposed to second hand cigarette and marijuna smoke in night clubs? And drink alcohol only once every other a weekend at most? Will a HIV+ person on Atripla still develop facial wasting at some point in time?

Response from Dr. Pierone

Smokers have accelerated development of wrinkles and skin creases so it follows that second hand exposure would pose similar, but a lesser degree of risk. The effects of modest alcohol use on facial wasting should be negligible, but heavy drinkers certainly seem to age faster.

Facial wasting may occur on Atripla, but the risk is much lower compared with some of the older agents.

Thanks for posting and best of luck!
