Buffalo hump and big belly
May 15, 2008

I have buffalo hump and a big belly. Is there an operation that Medicaid pays for that will help me, I am so depressed. Also, my face is changing all for the worst. Please help me get my life back.

Response from Dr. Pierone

Medicaid benefits vary depending on the State you live in, but as a general rule, surgical options for lipohypertrophy are not covered. If you are on a protease inhibitor-based regimen, then changing therapy may help with this problem. If your facial appearance has altered with a pattern of increased neck fat, then changing therapy should help this as well. If your face is developing lipoatrophy, then facial fillers can be transformative.

Human growth hormone may help with lipohypertrophy, especially if regimen can be tweaked to lessen the metabolic toxicity. Some Medicaid programs do pay for human growth hormone, albeit with strict eligibility limitations.

I hope this information helps and best of luck!
