Diet to gain weight ?
Nov 1, 2006

Dear Doctor,

I am sorry if my question has been answered on here before but you know how opinions change as time goes by ?

I had '' New Fill '' treatment 2 years ago and the effect is already starting to fade, I have amazingly had an agreement by the insurance company to pay for a liposuction from my belly and then have it injected into my face, the only thing is after a visit to the hospital yesterday it is been suggested that I do not seem to enough fat :-(. We are thinking that its best to let the '' New Fill '' fade until I get back to my gaunt look to see precisley where I need to be treated as any earlier treatment could confuse the issue ? I do have the typical large internal fat enlarged belly by the way.

So my question is, is there anything I can do in regards to diet to try and increase my body fat ? , I realise that this is not an easy task but would be very grateful for any advice.

I am undetectable, a T-cell count of 320 and my testosterone level is just above the lowest borderline, I weigh about 60 kilo's and I am 46 years old.

Thanks very much.

Roger.

Response from Dr. Henry

Switching off any HIV medications that might further aggravate fat loss (D4T or AZT for example) is important. Proven safe and effective interventions to increase subcutaneous fat are lacking. There is an ACTG study for patients taking D4T or AZT with fat loss that is evaluating uridine supplements as a treatment. I have not seen much published information about fat transfer from other areas to face though one report noted that the transferred fat actually hypertrophied resulting in chipmunk like appearance. . Testosterone supplementation may actually worsen fat loss according to another recent ACTG study so you can sense that treatment to promote fat gain remains a very frustrating area needing alot of futher research. I am not aware of any diet that can preferentially increase subcutaenous fat levels to regions like the face. KH
